Chapter 16

Evan

Sebastian was already walking back up the stairs, calling over his shoulder for Lucas to get mine and Sofia’s things. I didn’t even look at Lucas as I tucked Sofia against my chest and started toward the house. I could feel Abigail’s gaze on me, but I couldn’t bring myself to look at her now, either.

Too much was roiling around in my mind and heart, and I wasn’t sure what to say or do.

“We weren’t expecting you,” Abigail murmured, falling into step beside me as I climbed the stairs to the front porch. I did glance over at her then, noting that she was wearing a robe and no makeup.

“I guess I should have called to let you know. I’m sorry it’s so late.” Despite the pain these people had caused me, neither my mother nor Abigail had raised me to be rude. “I only made the decision to come today.”

I’d been afraid I might change my mind at any point, too, so I’d figured the best course of action was just to hop on the plane and go.

“It’s okay,” she said quickly. “I’m just so happy you’re here.”

I didn’t respond to that, but I wasn’t exactly sure what I was feeling here.

“The guest suite is available. You and Sofia can stay there.” Abigail glanced from me to Sofia, twisting her fingers together as she worried her bottom lip. I could see the tears still glistening in her eyes, and she looked like she might erupt at any moment. I sure hoped not. I wasn’t sure I could handle that right now.

“Sofia looks so much like Carlita,” she commented, her voice cracking on my mother’s name.

I swallowed hard against the fresh wave of pain that came up, and looked down at Sofia as I entered the home I’d spent almost nine years of my life in. “Does she?”

Sofia’s skin was bronzed like my own, but her hazel eyes were identical to Rosalind’s. Her hair had gotten a little darker over the past few months. Not the same shade of auburn as her mother’s, but it still had a reddish tint to the dark brown strands that were growing in. But her face… I could see it. I’d always thought I looked much more like my mother than my father, so I supposed it made sense that Sofia would resemble Mom, too.

I didn’t reply to that, though. I had enough on my mind without dredging up painful memories of my parents.

Sebastian was ahead of us, striding down the foyer and toward the large sweeping staircase that dominated the center of the entry, the ceiling open all the way to the third floor. I looked up, noticing there was a new chandelier hanging down, and the wooden railings lining the second and third floor landings had been replaced with wrought iron.

Glancing to the left and right, I realized just how much the home had changed over the years. It’d been completely redecorated, with the walls painted a bright modern white, and the furniture entirely new.
